In that environment, “best model wins globally” is less likely. “Best model available in your jurisdiction under your compliance posture” is more realistic.

First, map your model dependency by revenue exposure. Identify which products, customer segments, and geographies rely on specific frontier model tiers. If one provider policy change can block a high-value segment, that is board-level risk.

Second, design for model portability now. Keep prompts, tool schemas, and orchestration logic as provider-agnostic as possible. You do not need perfect interchangeability, but you need a tested fallback path.

Third, add compliance intelligence to product planning. Build a lightweight internal process for tracking export controls, sanctions developments, and provider policy updates that affect distribution.

Fourth, segment features by policy sensitivity. Keep high-risk capabilities modular so they can be regionally enabled, disabled, or replaced without breaking your whole product.

Fifth, update contracts and customer messaging. Be explicit about service dependencies and regional availability assumptions. Surprises destroy trust faster than limitations do.

What not to do

Do not assume today’s access equals tomorrow’s access. In frontier AI, capability governance is tightening, not loosening.

Do not bet the company on a single model vendor for critical features in politically sensitive markets. That is concentration risk disguised as speed.

Do not let policy teams operate in a silo. Product, engineering, legal, and GTM need one shared view of where regulatory and provider constraints can hit execution.
